Salutations! I'm Haia, your friendly neighborhood actor/director/playwright/dramaturg/teaching artist/scholar/more but I feel like I'm bordering on too many slashes. I'm currently getting my PhD Performance Studies at UCSD, and I got my BA in Theatre Arts with a minor in Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation from Brandeis University. I was bitten by the performance bug in elementary school and I strive to help others find the home I did in theatre, most recently both in the classroom and on the stage with The Public Domain Players, San Diego Repertory Theatre, JFest, Black Box Studios in NJ, the Cherubs program at Northwestern, Chicago Youth Shakespeare, and UCSD. My primary research focus is on performance in the ancient Mediterranean world as it pertains to female power in times of crisis and transition, but I'm generally interested in intersectional feminism in theatre and the ways in which performance can elevate and unearth voices that have historically been silenced or left out of the dominant narrative as well as guiding and empowering the next generation of performance artists-scholars. I also teach script analysis at UCSD, serve as the Director of Development and Intimacy Coordinator for a Shakespeare troupe and taught American Sign Language for the Stage with Edge of Orion. Recent projects include Winter's Tale (Dramaturg/Intimacy Coordinator), Boxed (Dramaturg/Fight Captain), Trojan Women (Dramaturg) and Uncle Vanya (Dramaturg) with UCSD; A Midsummer Night's Dream (Director/Puck), Cymbeline (Director), Henry VI Part III (Dramaturg), Much Ado About Nothing (Don Pedro), and immersive Hamlet (Director) and The Taming of the Shrew (Kate/Fight Choreo), with the Public Domain Players; Eurydice (Director), Fefu and Her Friends (Emma/ASL consultant), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck), Circle Mirror Transformation (Theresa), and an experimental production of Peer Gynt (Solveig/Aase) devoted to accessibility at Brandeis University; Everybody (Assistant Director/Teaching Artist) with Cherubs; and History in a Hare’s Breath, the educational webseries I created with my rescue ESA, Poppyseed Bun.
